AIMBarleygreen™ Research by Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara |
We salute Dr Hagiwara's contribution to the understanding of the importance of green plants in our diet, specifically the barley plant. Dr Hagiwara passed away in spring of 2004 but his contribution lives on. We now recommend BarleyLife as a replacement for the Barleygreen that we sold for 20 years. See BarleyLife for more information.
Over the years I have conducted and supported many different research projects to try to discover the active components in barley leaf extract. Of course, because I also produce AIMBarleygreen™, my own studies do not always carry the authority that they should in the academic community. Because of this, I have helped to fund barley leaf extract studies in many different universities which confirmed my own research in an unbiased community. Previous studies in Japan have documented the following benefits of barley leaf extract: In 1983, we reported that we had successfully isolated a protein in barley leaf extract with strong anti-inflammatory qualities. In 1985, we reported the discovery of substances in barley leaf extract that reduced hypercholesterolemia and substances that resulted in an anti-ulcer effect. We also completed studies in 1985 that successfully identified the presence of some components in barley leaf extract which de-activate mutagenic and carcinogenic substances. Some time later we were able to identify two very important enzymes, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase in barley leaf extract. We also observed water soluble components in barley leaf extract which were very effective in lowering the blood sugar levels in high blood sugar mice. These reports have been presented to the annual meetings of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan over the years and I have received many positive comments from my associates. I was honored to receive the Drug and Medical Meritorious Service Award from the Japanese Minister of Health and Welfare in 1994 for my years of research and contributions to helping improve the health of mankind. However, my desire has always been for this important information to go beyond Japan and to benefit the whole world. When it comes to scientific research, if you want to impact the world, it is best to conduct research in the United States. This is why I graciously accepted the invitation in early 1991 to serve as an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Toxicology at the University of California at Davis, I am very gratified that our earlier studies about the power of barley leaf extract have been confirmed once again through our U.S. research projects. During the past several years we have completed studies at several universities in the United States. At the University of California in Davis we have successfully identified a new substance in barley leaf extract which contains very impressive antioxidant properties. This substance is called 2'-O-Glycosylisovitexin. We have been able to demonstrate that it is more effective as an antioxidant than beta carotene or vitamin E. In addition, it is heat stable and, because it is a very small molecule, it is absorbed very easily in the body. There are many promising possibilities for this substance. It can be used as a healthful preservative in foods. It can be isolated out as a special supplement with exceptionally high antioxidant effects. It can also be used as a skin cream ingredient, both to preserve other substances in the cream and to provide antioxidant protection for the skin. We have also completed and published encouraging reports about barley leaf extract through George Washington University. One such study reported on the important substances found in barley leaf extract which help to inhibit platelet activating factor and to protect the blood vessels from damage. These substances are even effective throughout the micro-circulatory system, protecting the smallest vessels from damage. Another study completed at George Washington University has identified a protein in barley leaf extract which enhances release of growth hormone. This has implications in helping to improve immunological functions and slowing down the process of aging. No wonder AIMBarleygreen™ users often look younger and more vibrant than everybody else! All of these studies I have mentioned have been published in the appropriate professional journals for peer review. It is my hope that these will inspire other scientists to join with me in coming years as we continue to uncover the many benefits of barley leaf extract. There are two new studies that I would like to inform you about today. These are very recent studies and they have not been published yet. For that reason, I can only give you a brief summary of their findings. The first study, completed at UC Davis, looked at the potential for barley leaf extract to degrade a common pesticide, malathion, in vitro. Six different experiments where performed to measure the ability of barley leaf extract to "detoxify" this pesticide. Every one of the studies revealed very positive results. This study leads us to believe that barley leaf extract may provide a cleansing, or detoxifying benefit when pesticide accumulation has occurred in the body. More research will need to be completed to confirm this, but the initial findings are very positive. This report has been submitted for publication in a professional journal and will be available to AIM after it has been accepted for publication. In another study at UC Davis we have successfully identified several of the characteristics of 2'-0-Glycosylisovitexin. We have now confirmed that it is water soluble substance, it is stable, both in high temperatures and within a wide range of pH. It is also very effective as an antioxidant in lipid peroxidation caused by ultra violet irradiation. This confirms our earlier hypotheses that 2'-0-GIV may play a preventative role in aging, mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and radiation damage. It is also interesting to note that we have tested a variety of green products available for purchase today to ascertain whether they contain any active 2'-0-GIV. Among the products we tested were AIMBarleygreen™, Green Magma, Viva Green Barley, Kyo Green, Pines Wheat Grass, Green Kamut, Spirulina and Sun Chiorella. Of these products, only Barleygreen and Green Magma were found to have any active 2'-0-GlV present.
